MOINOPOLIS recently launched call for proposals for their competition, Living in the Spatial Shift. The competition aims examine the multifaceted opportunities and risks associated with the paradigmatic shift in the spatial perception, its architectural appearance and its consequences for our every day life.The spatial and universal understanding has ever been the basis for architectural views and practice. The new configuration of spatial parameters induced by a new logic of the proceeding worldwide network-based technology initiates the rethinking of spatial matters as well as the conditioning of adequate models and concepts. The spatial and universal understanding has ever been the basis for architectural perception and practice. The network-based logic of the information technologies, as Manuel Castells states, induces a new configuration of space such as the space of flows and space of places. Already in 1989 Ed Soja alludes in ‘Postmodern Geographies’ that our spatio-geographical interpretations of space are no longer sophisticated enough to describe and analzse the holistic changes driven by the ongoing process of globalization.
We are increasingly disconnecting our perception of the physical space from the general socio-cultural idea of space which is mainly affected by informational networks. The shift from the static and definite to the dynamic and infinite has changed our perception and our build environment.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of this radical but silent transformation and how can we respond to it? If everything is relational and never in a fixed position, what type of orientation do we need? What might be the consequences of this development for society and culture?
The actual topic has the aim to examine the multifaceted opportunities and risks associated with the paradigmatic shift in the spatial perception, its architectural appearance and its consequences for our everyday life. MOINOPOLIS is striving for significant reflections on “Living in the spatial shift” which critically appraise, sample and discuss the topic. The platform is open to substantive contributions such as conclusive papers, strong images, or even manifestos.
